Working with heavy plate and mining wear parts

PlateGate XL is designed for shops handling thick plate, hard-wearing structural parts and mining-adjacent fabrication. Its XL bed fits large plate formats, making it practical for nesting wear liners, baseplates, and reinforcing gussets in a single run.

The controlled pierce sequences and fixture options suit jobs where cut edge quality and pierce reliability are non-negotiable, especially on high-strength steels and manganese plate. Mining maintenance teams, train yards and heavy engineering workshops use PlateGate XL when part reliability counts.

Floor performance for thick stock and complex nests

On the floor, PlateGate XL runs at a pace set for thick, heavy stock. It’s not a thin-sheet sprinter but rather a workhorse for challenging jobs that need steady control over every pierce and contour.

Timed pierce cues and paired WeldPrep Beam options help reduce lost time from blown edges or poor lead-ins, especially when you’re cutting parts for direct fit-up or welding. The system’s nesting support and brief notes keep remnant handling clear, so your team don't waste hours unlocking a nest or chasing missing tags after each cut.

Choosing PlateGate XL versus other FibreLaser SA systems

If your main jobs involve regular sheet metal and light fabrication, our CutLine 1500 paired with SheetNest Pro will be a better fit. PlateGate XL comes into its own when you need to process thick plate, manage large or awkward nests, or prepare wear parts for mining and heavy industry.

For tubes, pipe or round bar work, TubeCut R8 would be the right system. If your focus is on deep engraving or permanent marking, EngraveFab 50 or Mark Pro 30 is the match. PlateGate XL is purpose-built for flat plate: high-mass, high-strength and heavy-duty jobs.

Site and safety requirements for PlateGate XL

The system needs a dedicated space with access for large plates and safe operator movement. Most PlateGate XL installs require a stable 400 V three-phase 50 Hz supply, fixed wiring signed off with a Certificate of Compliance (CoC) per SANS 10142-1. The chiller must use the manufacturer’s coolant, and you should check for dust or condensation, especially in Highveld or coastal workshops.

Fibre lasers in this class are classified as Class 4 under IEC 60825-1, so direct and reflected beams can cause permanent injury and are a fire risk. Your site must have laser safety eyewear rated for the fibre wavelength: CO2 glasses will not protect. The Radiation Control directorate at SAHPRA licenses both the machine and its use, and you need extraction with fine filtration for metal fume and dust. Never process PVC. Emergency stops, interlocks and trained, authorised operators are a legal requirement under the OHS Act and Driven Machinery Regulations.

Quote and sample cut information

To quote or run a sample part, we need your typical plate thickness, material grade (for example, Hardox, mild steel or stainless), and the largest nest or part size you plan to run. Let us know if you need WeldPrep Beam edge prep or any specific pierce or cut edge requirements.

Attach any drawings or DXF files, and include your preferred site for viewing (Sunnyrock HQ or one of the showroom bays). Send us a message through our contact form and one of the team will get in touch about the next steps.
