Cut
Rail and rolling stock
Fibre lasers cut and mark plate, sections and wear parts for rail refurbishers, wagon builders and maintenance crews across South Africa.
Systems
Start with these systems
Heavy plate
PlateGate XL
A larger bed fibre cell for thicker plate work, wear parts, and mining-adjacent fab where pierce discipline matters.

Portable mark
FieldMark Portable
A portable fibre marking kit for on-site serials, asset tags, and plant equipment that cannot visit the cell.

Edge prep
WeldPrep Beam
Beam edge-prep notes that leave welders with clean bevels and less grind time on structural and plate jobs.
ExploreTypical components and materials in rail work
Rail and rolling stock shops deal with hard-wearing steels, thick plate, high-strength alloys, stainless, and sometimes brass or aluminium for fittings. Common jobs include wagon floors, side frames, bolster plates, brake levers, coupler parts and wear liners. Spares for coaches and locomotives often require new serial plates or asset tags tied to a maintenance schedule.
Plate from 8 mm up to 25 mm is frequent, as are thick parts for mining or sidings. Mild steel grades like S355 and S690, stainless 304 or 316, and wear-resistant steels such as Hardox or similar are routine. These tough materials need reliable cutting, clean bevels and marks that last through years of service and outdoor conditions.
The right fibre laser systems for rail jobs
For large, heavy parts and thick plate, PlateGate XL gives the right bed size and power for railway fabrications. It can handle full sheets and big single items, ideal for baseplates, gussets and bogie components. The cell works with exhaust extraction and manages fumes from zinc or chrome alloys that are common in this sector.
FieldMark Portable is used when asset tags, VIN marks or on-site serialisation is needed, especially on rolling stock or plant that cannot fit in a cutting cell. It brings 30 watt-class fibre marking to depots, sidings and remote facilities. For preparing plate edges, WeldPrep Beam bevels and preps weld faces cleanly, reducing manual grinding before assembly.
Running a typical rail cutting or marking job
A typical job starts with a drawing or CAD file, usually a DXF or DWG. The process runs as follows:
- Review the CAD and material spec (grade, thickness, finish)
- Nest the parts with SheetNest Pro if you need to run several at once
- Load and secure the plate on the PlateGate XL bed
- Set up extraction to handle fumes from the chosen material
- Apply the correct gas (oxygen for mild steel, nitrogen for stainless or aluminium)
- Run a pierce test on thick plate and inspect the kerf and edge for dross
- If marking is needed offsite, set up FieldMark Portable and check for a safe, clear marking area
- Finish with edge prep if needed using WeldPrep Beam, then inspect for surface and dimensional quality
Quality issues we see and how to avoid them
For thick plate, incomplete pierces or excessive dross are common if the focus height, gas pressure or assist gas type are wrong. A dirty protective window under the cutting head will cause poor cut quality and even cracking, check and clean it daily. Stainless or galvanised parts can pick up edge staining if oxygen is used, so remove oxide layers before painting or coating.
Marking issues include too shallow engraving on asset tags or VIN plates, and poor contrast if the settings are not tuned for the alloy. On-site work with FieldMark Portable must be blocked off so bystanders are kept safe from Class 4 laser exposure and fumes. For all jobs, make sure the machine and operators are licensed under SAHPRA and meet OHS Act safety requirements.
What to send us for sample parts and support
Send us a clear CAD drawing with the material spec and plate thickness noted. List any marking, serial or asset tag requirements, and let us know if you need edge prep for welding. If you have concerns about a specific alloy or want to test cut quality, mention the application, such as coupler wear plates, bogie frames or brake levers.
You can drop off or courier samples to Sunnyrock HQ, or book a visit to a showroom bay for a hands-on review. Use our contact form to brief us and arrange a sample run or technical session tailored to your rail project.
