What each PlateGate XL spec means for your parts

The XL plate class bed gives you space to load full-size wear plate or structural blanks, which is essential for mining, plant maintenance, and big fabrication jobs. If you cut heavy or awkward plate, the bed design helps with handling and fixturing.

Thick plate focus means the system is tuned for slow, controlled piercing and edge quality on tough materials like Hardox, S355 and stainless. Timed pierce cues let you manage heat input, critical to avoid edge hardening and blowouts. WeldPrep pairing means you can cut and bevel in one setup, reducing secondary grinding.

What the specs do not tell you

On paper, PlateGate XL is all about plate size and thickness, but real results depend on your exact material, coating, and cut geometry. We always recommend sample cuts on your own material, especially if you use high-manganese steels or need crack-free edges for welding.

If you run hard-wearing parts, bring a drawing and a sample plate to Sunnyrock HQ or your nearest showroom bay for a first-article review. Ms Kelebogile Nxumalo’s team can optimise settings for your batch, and confirm edge prep with WeldPrep Beam if needed.

Site and utility planning for PlateGate XL

A floor-ready plate system like PlateGate XL needs careful site prep. You want enough space for loading and offloading, safe access for materials and forklift movement, and clear pathways for extraction ducting.

Power supply is typically 400 V three-phase, 50 Hz. Extraction is essential: thick plate cutting makes heavy metal fume, which means filtered local exhaust is non-negotiable. The machine and chiller add to your electrical load, get a registered electrician to check supply and issue a Certificate of Compliance.

Plan for compressed air lines if you use assist gas, and secure upright gas cylinders as per SANS 10019. Block off dust-prone areas and keep the chiller protected from workshop grime, especially on the Highveld.

  • Clear loading zones and access for plate and forklifts
  • 400 V three-phase power, CoC from a registered electrician
  • Local exhaust extraction with filtration
  • Assist gas lines and safe cylinder storage
  • Protected chiller area, away from dust

Questions to ask before comparing PlateGate XL quotes

Before you request a quote, confirm your maximum plate size, thickness, and material grades. Ask how the system handles timed piercing, edge quality, and bevel cutting in one pass.

Find out what is included in the support package, look for sample cell access, training, and local parts support. Make sure you understand the full install and safety requirements for your site. If you need to cut painted, coated or galvanised plate, ask about fume extraction and maintenance for the head and chiller.

Finally, check that the quote covers on-site commissioning, operator training, and support channels, these are not always standard.

  • What’s the actual maximum plate size and thickness?
  • Sample cut on your own plate: is that included?
  • Does the system include WeldPrep and timed pierce setups?
  • What are the power and extraction requirements?
  • Is local training and support covered in the quote?
