Coated and painted stock
Fibre lasers can mark and cut coated or painted sheet, but the coating affects both the process and the final result. Method and prep matter for good contrast and clean edges.
How coated and painted stock behaves with fibre lasers
Coated and painted sheet reflects and absorbs the laser beam differently compared to bare metal. The top layer can either interfere with the cut or help with contrast on marks, depending on the process and material.
For cutting, thicker and more heat-resistant coatings need more energy to pierce and can leave residue on the cut edge. For marking, fibre lasers can remove paint or powder selectively for crisp, contrasting marks, but the mark depth and edge depend on the coating thickness and type.
Choosing assist gas or mark method for coated steel and aluminium
When cutting painted or powder-coated mild steel, oxygen is often used as an assist gas, but the coating can burn and leave a rough edge, so edge clean-up is usually needed before further finishing. Nitrogen gives a cleaner, oxide-free edge on stainless or aluminium but uses more gas.
For marking, ablation is the common method: the laser removes the coating without cutting into the metal. Adjust settings to avoid burning or melting the paint around the mark. Annealing is not practical through most coatings, so engraving or ablation is used for permanent marks.
Preparation, storage and handling in South African workshops
Coating quality, humidity and surface dust all affect laser results. Poor storage can lead to moisture under paint or powder, blistering during cutting, or inconsistent marks.
Workshops on the Highveld need to watch for dust contamination, while coastal regions must guard against salt and condensation under the coating. Handle all coated stock with clean gloves to avoid fingerprints and marks.
- Store coated sheet dry, under cover and off the ground
- Wipe surfaces with a lint-free cloth before laser work
- Stack with interleaf if possible to prevent scratches
- Rotate old stock to avoid expired or degraded coatings
- Check for rust or blisters, especially on coastal deliveries
Best systems for coated and painted sheet and why we test your sample
For cutting coated sheet, the CutLine 1500 paired with SheetNest Pro handles most work, and AutoFeed Cut helps with volume. For thick plate with heavy paint or wear coatings, PlateGate XL is the better choice. For marking and ablation, Mark Pro 30 and BeamDesk Mini deliver good contrast, while EngraveFab 50 is used for deep engraving through thicker coatings.
We always run your coated or painted sample first at Sunnyrock HQ before dialling in a production recipe. Factors like paint type, thickness and substrate vary, so a first-article review ensures you get the right mark or cut edge for your process.
