ExploreParts and materials in local automotive bracket work
Typical automotive brackets in South Africa are made from mild steel, stainless steel (304 or 316), and occasionally aluminium, depending on the assembly environment and OEM requirements. Brackets may range from seat and chassis mounts to electrical supports or hose holders.
Most bracket blanks come from coil or sheet stock, usually between 1.2 and 3 mm thick, but thicker plate is common for suspension or load-bearing assemblies. Traceability is critical, especially for export, so correct part marking and batch identification are specified on the drawing.
Fibre laser systems matched to automotive supplier needs
For cutting, the CutLine 1500 system gives repeatable results and stable cut quality on South African shop floors. It handles standard automotive sheet and bracket sizes with CNC accuracy and is compatible with local 400 V supplies. Nesting is managed through SheetNest Pro, optimising sheet yield for all bracket shapes, even high-mix runs.
Part marking is best handled by the DualHead Mark cell when you need both flat and rotary marking (such as flat brackets and bush sleeves) without extra setup. For high-volume flat marking or deep serials, Mark Pro 30 offers a compact, fast solution. All our marking heads support direct marking of Data Matrix codes for traceability.
- CutLine 1500 for sheet and plate cutting
- SheetNest Pro for bracket nest layouts
- DualHead Mark for flexible part marking
- Mark Pro 30 for high-speed serialisation
Job flow from drawing to finished bracket
A typical automotive bracket job starts with a CAD drawing in DXF or DWG format, specifying all holes, bends, and marking requirements. The process runs as follows:
- Review drawing and material spec (grade, thickness, finish)
- Create nest in SheetNest Pro for optimal yield
- Load material and check for surface contaminants
- Run the CutLine 1500 to cut blanks and features
- Deburr edges if required for safety or coating
- Set up the marking cell (DualHead Mark or Mark Pro 30)
- Mark batch codes, part numbers, and Data Matrix as per brief
- Final inspection for burrs, mark quality, and part geometry
Quality problems and prevention in bracket production
Common issues include excessive burrs on mild steel, uneven edge quality from dirty protective windows, and incomplete marking if the focus is not set on curved or angled faces. Stainless steel cut with oxygen shows a dark oxide layer, which must be removed before coating.
Prevent these problems by keeping the protective window under the cutting head clean and inspecting it daily. Always use the specified assist gas and ensure the marking fixture holds irregular bracket shapes securely. Extract all fume from stainless or galvanised sheet to protect workers and ensure lasting mark legibility.
Sending files and samples for review or first-article
If you'd like us to run a sample cut or marking test, send us a message using our contact form. Attach your drawing (DXF or DWG preferred), material grade, thickness, and any marking requirements such as serial, logo or code, plus the quantity you plan to run.
For first-article reviews, you can deliver your own material to Sunnyrock HQ, or we can source standard grades from local stockists. Ms Kelebogile Nxumalo leads the applications review and will handle your sample through the cut, marking and inspection stages.
