Thin electronics stock
Thin electronics stock, like pre-coated chassis sheet and cover plate, demands careful warp control and clean marking for reliable assembly.
Behaviour of thin electronics stock under fibre lasers
Thin electronics sheet, whether mild steel, stainless or aluminium, works well with fibre laser energy. The fast, concentrated heat input gives a clean cut edge but also makes these light gauges prone to warping if the cutting sequence or support is not well planned.
Marking on thin stock needs particular care with focus and pulse settings to avoid heat distortion, especially on coated or anodised surfaces. Fibres excel at high contrast marking on coated or anodised aluminium, and can do fine, shallow marks for codes or logos without distorting the sheet.
Assist gas and mark method choices for best results
For cutting, nitrogen is preferred when you want a bright, oxide-free edge on stainless or aluminium electronics covers. It avoids the oxide layer left by oxygen, which otherwise may need secondary cleaning before assembling or finishing.
Compressed air can also cut thin mild steel or aluminium for internal brackets, though always ensure the supply is dry and oil-free to protect cut quality and the optics. For marking, use settings that match the material state: annealing for clean, colour-stable marks on stainless, or engraving/ablation for coated stock.
Preparation, storage and handling in South African workshops
Thin electronics stock must be kept flat and clean, as even minor dents or dust can affect nesting accuracy and edge quality. Humidity, coastal salt, and temperature swings alter surface condition and can cause corrosion or oxidation before or after the cut.
Before running a nest, wipe down the sheets, check for finger marks (which can etch under the laser), and confirm the protective films are compatible with your chosen cut or mark process. Store stock indoors, away from welding spatter or abrasive dust.
- Store flat on dry, level racks
- Keep covered to avoid workshop dust
- Wipe surfaces before loading
- Avoid handling with oily gloves
- Condition the stack to room temperature
- Check for condensation if moving from cold storage
Best-fit FibreLaser SA systems and the value of sample cuts
Our CutLine 1500 with SheetNest Pro is well suited to processing thin electronics stock, giving precise nest control and edge quality. The Mark Pro 30 and BeamDesk Mini handle permanent marking of codes, logos, and panel labels, with options for fine detail and shallow depth.
We always recommend a sample cut or mark review on your actual stock, as finish, coating and batch variation can affect results. Bring a sample to Sunnyrock HQ or your nearest appointment showroom to see the edge and mark quality firsthand before running production.
