What each WeldPrep Beam spec means in practice
WeldPrep Beam is designed for preparing edges and bevels on metal parts before welding, giving you consistent, programmable edge conditions to improve weld quality and reduce manual grinding. The system outputs bevel cues, which means it can cut parts with the correct angle and land for strong, repeatable weld joints.
It is best used where you need weld-ready edges straight off the machine, saving time on manual prep and reducing material waste. WeldPrep Beam pairs with larger cutting cells like PlateGate XL for plate work or TubeCut R8 for rotary tube jobs, so you can handle both flat and round profiles.
Quality assurance (QA) is based on the time spent grinding or finishing after the cut. The aim is to minimise this by dialling in the right laser parameters. Support and further training are anchored at our Sunnyrock HQ, where you can also run sample parts.
What the specs do not show you
Specs will not tell you how WeldPrep Beam handles your particular material, thickness or joint design. Different grades of steel, stainless, and aluminium will need tailored settings for bevel, feed rate and assist gas.
We encourage you to bring or send your own sample parts and drawings to Sunnyrock HQ for a first-article run. Our team, led by Ms Kelebogile Nxumalo and Mr Neels Jansen, will help you test edge quality, fit-up and how much grinding is still needed on your specific jobs.
Be aware that settings for weld prep are not the same as for standard sheet cutting. The bevel angle, kerf width and heat input all need attention for each production batch.
Site and utility requirements to plan for
Before installation, your workshop must be ready for the WeldPrep Beam system and its paired cutting cell. This means checking both space and compliance for machinery and laser safety.
Edge prep cells like WeldPrep Beam typically need: a stable, clean floor; a 400 V three-phase 50 Hz electrical supply (with fixed wiring and a CoC from a registered electrician); local exhaust extraction and filtration for cutting fume; and secure gas cylinder storage under SANS 10019.
- 400 V three-phase 50 Hz supply with CoC
- Local fume extraction and filtration
- Stable, level floor space for cell and cut material
- Chained, upright gas cylinder storage
- Access for safe machine delivery and setup
The questions to ask before comparing quotes
When looking at systems for weld prep, do not focus only on quoted features. Ask which bevel angles, edge conditions and part sizes are proven, not only possible in theory.
Check what is included for first-article support and sample runs. Confirm if QA support, factory training, and integration with your existing cutting or tube lines is part of the package. Look for clarity on required facility upgrades and what counts as a complete, compliant installation.
Finally, ask how the system is supported in South Africa: where are the application and technical teams based, and can you reach support quickly if you need parameter help or urgent spares?
- Which bevels and edge types are proven on your material?
- Is a first-article sample run included?
- What support and training is provided locally?
- What are the full installation and safety requirements?
- How does the QA process work for weld-ready parts?
