Uitenhage rail plate

Upgrading to a PlateGate XL cell with custom pierce windows improved cut quality and handling on heavy rail plate work in Uitenhage’s rolling stock workshop.

Tough cutting conditions in Uitenhage

In Uitenhage, a fabrication shop specialising in rail rolling stock faced repeated issues cutting thick plate for side frames and coupler mounts. Conventional oxyfuel and plasma methods left too much cleanup and produced variable edges, leading to extra grinding before welding or painting.

The steel plate was often large and heavy, making loading and offloading a manual challenge. Operators also struggled with precise placement of pierce points around pre-marked windows and slots, which needed clean edges to avoid stress risers in finished rail assemblies.

PlateGate XL and tailored pierce windows

After a site review, we recommended installing a PlateGate XL cell with pierce window programming matched to the rail specifications. The larger cell handled the full plate size in one go, and dedicated nest briefs ensured every cut started at the right point and followed the correct sequence.

We also worked with the operators to design custom pierce window settings in SheetNest Pro, reducing spatter near holes and critical edges. Our team helped set up local exhaust extraction close to the cutting bed, given the fine particulate and welding fume risks from thick plate, especially when using oxygen as an assist gas.

Results from steady production

A few months into production, the shop reported better consistency on all rail plate runs. The new cell’s bed size matched the yard’s stock plates, so there was no more repositioning or mid-job lifting. Operators quickly adapted to the new sequence, with less downtime between nests.

Edge quality around windows and slots improved, reducing both weld prep time and the need for post-cut grinding. The pierce window settings made a visible difference, especially on thicker sections, and cleaning routines for the protective window became part of the daily schedule.

Lessons for other heavy fabrication yards

For workshops handling rail plate or other heavy steel, the main lesson was to match cell size and nest programming to real plate handling needs. Investing in a suitable cutting cell reduces manual work and shortens prep time between jobs.

Custom pierce window settings, regular checks on extraction and protective window cleaning, and operator training all contributed to better output and safer conditions. Any yard planning to upgrade should bring their own gauges and handling gear to first-article reviews, as site constraints and material flows differ between Joburg, the coast, and the Eastern Cape.

  • Match bed size to your largest stock plates
  • Program pierce windows for clean edges
  • Prioritise fume extraction near the cutting bed
  • Train operators on cleaning and nest routines
  • Review material flow and lifting options early
