TubeCut for implement builders

FibreLaser SA has shared mitre cutting notes and rotary setup tips with implement builders in the Free State using the TubeCut R8 system. These updates assist with chassis and boom production.

TubeCut R8 guidance for implement fabrication

Our applications team at Sunnyrock has provided new mitre cutting notes to Free State agricultural implement builders using the TubeCut R8 rotary system. This guidance focuses on repeatable mitres, saddle cuts and slotting for chassis, toolbars and boom arms.

The shared notes cover alignment, cut sequence and fixture setup when working with RHS, round tube and oval profiles. Proper fixturing reduces vibration and helps maintain cut accuracy on long members, which is key for welded assemblies.

Handling set-up and safety in rotary tube cutting

With rotary tube cutting, correct setup is essential. The TubeCut R8 head uses dedicated chucks for fast clamping and repeatable orientation, and our team shared tips on referencing the tube datum for consistent mitre angles.

Laser safety is critical: the open-frame design of TubeCut R8 exposes operators to Class 4 radiation during setup and maintenance. Anyone working around the machine must use certified fibre laser safety eyewear with suitable optical density at 1064 to 1080 nm. Never rely on CO2 laser glasses. Interlocks and emergency stops must be checked before production runs.

Extraction, gas choice and Free State conditions

Implement yards cutting galvanised or alloy tube should use local exhaust extraction with filtration to control zinc and fine particulate fume. Avoiding PVC coatings is vital, as lasering these releases corrosive and harmful gases.

For clean, weld-ready cuts on mild steel, oxygen assist is standard, but remember that oxide needs to be removed before painting. Nitrogen is used when a bright, oxide-free edge is needed, especially on stainless or aluminium.

  • Secure gas cylinders upright per SANS 10019
  • Daily check of the protective window under the cutting head
  • Keep chiller coolant within spec for winter frost
  • Extract and filter fume to comply with the Hazardous Chemical Agents Regulations
