MicroMark medical pilots
FibreLaser SA is running MicroMark pilots for medical part and instrument identification with Western Cape instrument specialists, focusing on clean-bench marking and traceability requirements.
Piloting MicroMark for medical traceability
Our team has started MicroMark Lab pilot projects with several instrument shops in the Western Cape, targeting medical and laboratory part identification. These pilots focus on clean-bench applications where hygiene, corrosion resistance and precise traceability are essential.
The MicroMark Lab system is designed for fine, non-invasive marking on stainless steel and titanium, which are standard in medical tools. Annealing and micro-engraving allow for permanent, legible codes and serial numbers without removing material or creating grooves that could harbour contaminants.
Meeting cleanroom and compliance standards
Marking on medical and surgical instruments must meet strict hygiene standards, so we run the clean-bench trials in controlled environments. Our applications team checks that marks remain readable after repeated sterilisation cycles and cleaning.
For these applications, we recommend local exhaust extraction with proper filtration to control metal fume and particulates. Most Western Cape shops have had to review their fume extraction setups, as fine particulate from laser marking can stay airborne longer than many expect.
Training and technical support in the Western Cape
Instrument shops joining the pilot get practical training from our applications lead, Ms Firdous Bassier. Sessions cover safe setup, micro-marking parameters, and daily checks of the protective window to avoid quality issues.
We also support equipment registration with SAHPRA Radiation Control, as medical sites must licence each Class 4 laser model used for marking. Dont forget to check the optical density of your laser eyewear: CO2 glasses will not protect against fibre lasers.
