FieldMark with mining maintainers
Mining maintenance teams are using our FieldMark Portable fibre laser kit to tag equipment on site, cutting downtime by marking wear parts, tools and assets directly in the field.
Direct part marking in the field
FieldMark Portable is designed for on-site use by mining maintenance crews who need to mark equipment, spares or wear parts where they lie. With no need to haul heavy gear back to a workshop, teams can generate deep, permanent asset IDs, barcodes or traceability codes directly on steel and alloy surfaces.
The unit is rugged, with a fibre laser head and controller in a portable carry case. It runs off single-phase 230 V power and can operate from a UPS or generator if power is unstable. This suits mines and plant sites where asset marking needs to happen near conveyors, mills or underground entrances.
Improving uptime and asset tracking
Permanent laser marking helps identify and track wear parts and tools in demanding mining environments. Asset tags, QR codes and serials are readable even after exposure to abrasion or chemicals, unlike stickers or paint.
By marking equipment in place, maintenance teams reduce risk and downtime from moving critical spares. Tracking life cycles, repairs and swaps becomes easier, supporting better record keeping and compliance with mine safety systems.
Laser safety and maintenance requirements
Using FieldMark in the field means safety is critical. The fibre laser source is Class 4, so direct and reflected beams are hazardous to eyes and skin. Operators must use laser-rated eyewear specific to the fibre wavelength, not glasses for CO2 lasers.
Local exhaust extraction should be used to remove metal fume and fine particles created during marking, especially in confined areas. The system needs regular cleaning of the optics and protective window, and site use needs to comply with SAHPRA’s licence conditions and the OHS Act.
- Use laser-rated eyewear at 1064 to 1080 nm
- Keep extraction on during marking
- Check and clean optics after each shift
- Store the system in a dry, dust-free place
